Spring 2021 Newsletter

We envision a world with Zero Breast Cancer.

Dear Reader,

It’s time to celebrate Spring’s warmer weather and the fact that more than half of US adults have received at least one Covid-19 vaccine! While there is a light at the end of the tunnel, we need to continue to keep ourselves and others safe.

This is a great time to get back to healthy routines, like getting a screening mammogram and heading outdoors for a walk or a roll. We can do many things as individuals for our health, and even more together!

In this e-newsletter, we highlight projects developed with college students and study participants to improve health and wellness and reduce the risk of breast cancer, especially in marginalized communities.

Read on to learn about ZBC on Spanish-language TV, student-created YouTube videos, research on hormones in beef, and top podcasts for breast cancer survivors.

And don’t forget to give feedback on our latest campaign and register for our next free webinar. In the 2nd of our Advancing Health Equity in Breast Cancer webinar series, Our ZIP Codes & Breast Cancer: Working Together for Healthier Places, you will learn more about how place matters and what we can do for everyone’s health. We hope you can join us!

Kevin Gay

Yours in health,

Kevin

Univision TV image with host and Catherine Thomsen

ZBC is proud that Program Director Catherine Thomson was interviewed for a news show on Univision recently! She and Program Director Lianna Hartmour were on a workgroup for the Alcohol Research Group’s first breast cancer initiative. Catherine introduced the #drinklessforyourbreasts campaign on Spanish news, as part of the effort to increase awareness among young women of the role of alcohol in breast cancer risk. Watch the video in Spanish and learn more about alcohol as a breast cancer risk factor on the #drinklessforyourbreasts campaign website!

College Students Create Videos to Reduce Peers' Risk of Breast Cancer

Three Dominican University students' pictures under the text Zero Breast Cancer, Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer Videos

For their Business Leadership Practicum, Dominican University students Brianna Arevalo, Jorrane Martins Moreno, and Elias Muro worked with Lianna to develop English and Spanish-language videos about how to reduce breast cancer risk. They created a survey for their peers, collected data in English and Spanish, and created six YouTube videos that were informed by survey results. Learn more and watch the videos!

The HAMBURGER Study of Beef & Breast Cancer

Meat counter

We know that eating red meat increases colon cancer risk, but what about breast cancer? ZBC is partnering with Public Health Institute investigator Dr. Gina Solomon and her team on a study to look at this question in the HAMBURGER (Hormones And Meat: does Beef Under-Regulation Generate Estrogenic Residues) Study. Read about it in our blog article!

Give Your Opinion to Help Prevent Breast Cancer

Black person's hand next to a cell phone that has a picture of a poster

We’ve got 6 "posters" and everyone is invited to give their opinion by filling out our surveys. These "posters" may be used in other formats, like as graphics for social media or printed postcards. We are especially seeking the input of young adults (ages 18-35, all genders), BIPOC, and people with lower income. Visit zbclink.org/posterfeedback to let us know what you think.

*The first 10 people to give feedback on all 6 posters and include their email addresses will receive a $25 gift card! After that, there will be a drawing for another $25 gift card among people who have given their opinion on all 6 posters before May 31.

Tell us what you think!
