MICHAEL BROFFMAN, LAc
Pine Street Clinic
Michael Broffman is an Acupuncturist and certified Chinese Medical Practitioner who has practiced in Hong Kong, Taiwan and California. His expertise as a healer and wealth of knowledge of both conventional and complementary therapies is unsurpassed. Michael's patients not only extoll the virtues of his knowledge, but also his compassion and ability to instill hope. He is mutually respected by both conventional medical practitioners and his peers in Chinese medicine.

Pine Street is well known as an excellent resource for all cancer patients and to quote Michael, "It is our temperamnet at Pine Street Clinic to be more group identified than as individuals. So even though I am the one honored, I certainly share the honor with everyone from Pine Street."

DAVID LAKES, MD
Chief of Medical Oncology, Kaiser Permanente
David Lakes is a Medical Oncologist and Hematologist and has been with Kaiser San Rafael for 22 years. His role is to diagnose, facilitate and oversee individual treatment plans and assist his patients with making the many decisions necessary for their cancer care. He is always compassionate and caring and gives all the time necessary to help his patients better understand and deal with their disease. Dr. Lakes believes that "healing" is not necessarily "curing." There is also a need to comfort patients. His primary interest as a doctor has always been to take care of his patients, as he finds it immensely satisfying.

As quoted by one of his nominators, "I am truly grateful to Dr. Lakes for his willingness to expand the traditional oncologist/physician role and be a healer in the best sense of the word."

SANDY TRUEX, RN
Breast Health Coordinator, B.R.E.A.S.T Center at Marn General Hospital's Marin Cancer Insitute
Sandy coordinates Marin General Hospital's Marin B.R.E.A.S.T. Center, an invaluable resource center for women with breast cancer. She feels that although she is being honored, all the people of the Marin B.R.E.A.S.T. Center share this honor with her, as it is a team effort.

Her role involves support and education, including preparing women for breast surgery or procedures and providing emotional support to the patient and family in addition to helping them navigate the system. She is also the co-leader of a support group for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Her rich professional life includes teaching in the nursing program at the College of Marin. To quote Sandy, "I try to provide enough information so the women know they are getting the best standard of care, as the decisions can be overwhelming."
