Zero Breast Cancer succeeds in very large part due to a dedicated cadre of volunteers, some of whom offer specialized and/or skilled pro-bono services. This month we thank and recognize 6 people who supported ZBC work in 2018 by translating, narrating, and/or reviewing new elements of our Girls’ New Puberty campaign: Chely Córdova, Frances Chiu, Hannah Barlow, Larry Chu, Maritza Cárdenas, and Perry Borders. 

Chely Córdova narrated the voice-over for our Spanish-language YAB videos, which will be integrated into the soon-to-be released Spanish eGuide, and translated the narration for the Spanish-language tips videos. Chely hails from San Rafael and graduated from Marin Academy in 2015. She is currently a senior at Wesleyan University. She studied abroad in Mexico in her junior year and her major is American Studies with a concentration in Latin America.

Frances Chiu  translated our infographic into Chinese, in addition to translating and voicing the Chinese-language tips videos. Frances studied at the Haas Business School, University of California, Berkeley and has built a career in the Bay Area in software services. Frances is a busy, bilingual Mom of nearly year old Sean and she kindly undertook the project during her maternity leave. ZBC ED Rose Barlow partnered with Frances during their time together at Market Metrix (now part of Clarabridge) in creating, fielding and analyzing employee engagement surveys in Mandarin and Cantonese for hospitality industry clients. Hannah Barlow, daughter of ZBC ED Rose Barlow, assisted with the Girls’ New Puberty campaign in varying capacities over the past three years including helping to focus the messaging, advising on preparing materials for use on social media and testing materials with native Spanish speakers. Hannah too graduated from Marin Academy in 2015 and spent a gap year in Spain and Nicaragua. She has also worked in the Dominican Republic. Hannah is a junior at University of Maryland, College Park and is double majoring in Spanish and International Development with a concentration on Latin America.

Larry Chu helped with Chinese translations and reviewed our Chinese-language tips videos. Larry is the pastor of the Alameda East Bay Chinese Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Maritza Cárdenas narrated our Spanish-language tips videos and helped with translating the text for our upcoming Spanish eGuide. As a teen, Maritza was a research assistant for the youth-led Health and Environmental Research in Make-up of Salinas Adolescents (HERMOSA) study, which examined teen girls’ exposure to hormone disruptors in cosmetics. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2017 with a BS in Molecular and Cell Biology Major (minor in Creative Writing). Currently, she is a Clinical Research Coordinator at UCSF while she works on applying to medical school. Click here to find her on LinkedIn.

Perry Borders is the voice of our English-language tips videos. As a pre-teen and teen, Perry was a participant in the Cohort of Young Girls’ Nutrition, Environment and Transitions (CYGNET) study. CYGNET research inspired the book The New Puberty: How to Navigate Early Development in Today’s Girls by Louise Greenspan, MD, and Julianna Deardorff, PhD, on which our Girls’ New Puberty campaign is based. In addition to working as a nanny, she is currently a stand-up comedian doing shows around the Bay Area.
