MARION H.E. KAVANAUGH-LYNCH, MD, MPH

The 2008 Community Breast Cancer Research Award was presented to Dr. Marion H.E. (Mhel) Kavanaugh-Lynch, Director of the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP). Dr. Kavanaugh-Lynch is an international leader in breast cancer research and women’s health. The CBCRP is the largest publically-funded state breast cancer research program in the US and is nationally recognized for its funding of innovative breast cancer research throughout California.

As CBCRP Director, Dr. Kavanaugh-Lynch develops strategies and guides priorities for the $15 million per year that California invests in breast cancer research to bring an end to this disease. Her extraordinary accomplishments include championing the role of advocates and survivors in the scientific review and grant-making process.

Her commitment to bringing women's voices into research decisions drew her to the California Breast Cancer Research Program, a model that evolved and continues to grow from the wisdom, energy and dreams of California women affected by breast cancer. Dr. Kavanaugh-Lynch has received numerous honors from breast cancer advocacy groups. She chairs the bi-annual California Breast Cancer Research Program Symposium that convenes scientists, policymakers, advocates, and California citizens to dialogue on breast cancer research progress and challenges.
